Only two things in life are certain...

Death and Taxes! (Come on, who couldn't see that coming??)

That's right, it's tax time again, and as I always wind up putting this stuff of until the last possible minute, I hadn't even thought about this yet until I came to the sudden, and rather startling realization that I'm going to be in Florida almost constantly between now and 15 April, which means that "the last minute" is kind of now! Opps! Good thing I bought Turbo Tax in January, right (yes, that I do months in advance)? Except then I get a phone call from my accountant mother, who tells me that for some reason I don't really understand, I can't file my taxes until after 31 March. Okay, fine, except that if I wait until after 31 March, then the ONLY days I can do it are 4 or 6 April...what are the odds I'm going to remember that??? Well I tell you, they'd better be pretty DARN high!! Fingers crossed for me please!

How I Met Your Mother

Okay, so I just watched the Britney Spears episode of HIMYM, and I thought it was great...not so much b/c of Britney, though she wasn't bad at all, but because I feel like we're getting closer to figuring out who "the mother" is. At the moment, I have two 'theories' -- the first is that it's the woman who bumped into Ted in the bar at the St. Patty's day party. She appeared to be wearing the same, or similar pants to the yellow umbrella woman we saw outside the club. The second theory, and one I formed after watching tonight's episode, is that Sarah Chalke's character is the mother. She said she went to a St. Patty's day party, but left early (perhaps leaving her yellow umbrella behind??), and they had a very good 'meet cute.' Of course, I'm not sure how the age of the children works out, since the girl you seen in the flash forwards doesn't seem THAT much older than the boy, so I could be completely off base (and god knows, probably am based on my previous track record with this sort of thing!). At any rate, I'm sure we'll find out eventually...though if we don't, I'll be beyond ticked off. This is one of my favorite shows on TV right now, and of course, those of you who know me well know I'm just an itty, bitty bit obsessed with TV, especially TV shows on DVD, so until my other favorites come back with new post-WGA Strike episodes, HIMYM is getting me through the dry spell.

Also, TiVo rocks!! :)

Happy Almost Easter!

There's a lot going on tomorrow, so I don't know if I'm going to be able to post anything, so I'll take this opportunity to say Happy Easter to everyone!

For the first time in my lifetime, I'm not saying 'Happy Cabinet' to folks on Easter Eve. Some of you know that my dad and his six best friends formed "The Kitchen Cabinet" when they were about my age. Ever since then, they've all gotten together each year on Easter weekend. This is the first time in I don't know how many years that they haven't done it, and don't worry, it's not because anything's wrong, it's because they've turned wimpy in their old age (I can say that with 99% certaintly that none of them will be reading this blog :) and so won't get offended.)...for the last couple years the weather in NW Ohio has been crap on Cabinet weekend, and they haven't been able to golf or play bocce ball, so they've decided to move it to Derby Day in May...maybe they'll make the winner of the Run for the Roses part of the Cabinet pool, who knows? At any rate, it's a little odd to me to think that no one in Ohio is going to be answering the phone with "Happy Cabinet!" and confusing telemarketers everywhere, but I'm thrilled that the tradition will continue in May...even if I will be miserable and getting my wisdom teeth out at the time. :(

Anyhow, I've got to finish cleaning and my prep work for brunch tomorrow, but hope everyone has a very Happy Easter! (And M, happy birthday to Kiddo C!)

Welcome to 5H2O!!

Okay, so for those of you who haven't been there (which, I'm pretty sure is everyone but Alissa and obviously Ben...), THIS is 5H2O (Pentwater), my favorite place in the world.

Which has some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world (and the legendary occasional purple or green flash)! I used to think as a little kid that Lake Michigan would be warmest right after sunset because the sun sank right into the lake. I think it was pretty good logic for a 4 year old!

This is a town that doesn't have a grocery store, but DOES have three ice cream shops...but it's fabulous ice cream! :)

5H2O is also the home of one of my favorite shopping events of the year...the Pentwater Art Fair! Seen below, they turn the village green (where the band concerts are hosted every Thursday night in the summers) into a sea of white tents stocked with artisans of every size, shape and color. There's everything from beautiful, unique jewelry (which is where I get 95% of my stuff and spend 200% of my money...my credit card company loves Art Fair Day...) to hand-carved wooden furniture, to crazy modern-art style paintings and wonderful local (and not so local) photography (my mom has a great shot of hundreds of houses perched all over a cliff in Greece). It's one of my favorite days of the year, and I look forward to it all year long.

And finally, the front room, or what I like to call the book room. I don't know if you can really tell from this shot, but the walls are all nothing but shelves, and the shelves are filled to bursting with books...and it's a testament to my grandmother's organized soul that every single one of them is in alphabetical order by author's last name. So when you come visit, don't worry about bringing enough to read...God knows that we'll have something that tickles your fancy...every genre from sci-fi to murder mystery to romance to biography to history to current events to thriller to trashy beach reads (lots and lots of trashy beach reads. After all, the beach is only a flight of stairs away!).

Anyhow, that's a little glimpse of my favorite place in the world, and the reason my blog is named what it is. Let me know if you ever want to visit! :)

And this is why I love Jon Stewart...

"I think that'll work out great if your home is made out of plastic and located on Baltic Avenue."

(March 17, 2008 - speaking of the $600 tax rebate to help home owners)

I mean, Tesco's right, Every Little Helps (yes, that's a shout out to my Ireland peeps...did I just say peeps...well, we'll chalk it up to an obsession with the sugary marshmallow treats right before Easter and leave it at that.), but man, $600 to help out struggling homeowners? That's not even a mortgage payment around here!

So I hear this "blog" thing is all the rage...

Well if all the cool kids are doing it....can I be cool too??

Welcome to CW5H2O!

Since Mel and Molly both have blogs, and since I'm ashamed to admit that it's the main way I keep up with the lives of my friends not in our nation's capital, I've been shamed into starting one of my own. I seem to recall Mel previously shaming me into updating my LiveJournal more frequently...anyone else noticing a pattern here?

I hope I can keep up with this, and I hope it can serve as a way for many of us to continue to stay in touch as I start moving around the country. For those of you not aware, I'm moving to Florida in July...State's transferring me to our office there, and while I'm 1,000% excited about it, I'm about 2,000% nervous about how much there is to do, and how quickly time seems to be dwindling away from me. (Sidenote: Did everyone know that there are only three words in the English language that begin with the letters 'dw'? Can anyone name them? For bonus points, can anyone remember where I got this little factoid that I use way too frequently?)

Part of my time between now and July is going to be spent doing crazy organizing before the move, part of it will be spent traveling for work, and part of it will be spent on vacation! It's the last part I'm most excited about if you can't tell.

The first mini-vacation is going to be a girl's long-weekend in Vegas this May, which will mark my first ever trip West of Chicago (yes, I'm sheltered, leave me alone)! I'm over-the moon excited and trying to decide what names the four of us should use while we're there, in the true "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" spirit. Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda? Buffy, Faith, Willow and Cordelia? Prue, Piper, Phoebe and Paige? Lorelei, Rory, Lane and Paris? Monica, Rachel, Phoebe and Emma? Veronica, Lily, Mac and Meg? C.J, Donna, Abby and Zoe? Blair, Natalie, Tootie and Jo? I just can't decide...and CLEARLY I've spent too much time thinking about it!!

The second vacation is going to be a week with the girls in fabulous 5H2O! For those of you who haven't known me long enough (or just plain don't remember) that's Pentwater, MI, my favorite place in the world and the spot where my family has had a cottage for four generations. This will be the first time I've ever been up there without my grandparents/parents/aunts/uncles around, and the first time I've been able to bring a big group of friends, so I'm thrilled. It's going to be a great time!

Okay, I think that's about enough for today. Here's hoping I can keep up with this better than the LiveJournal I haven't written in since 2005! Fingers crossed!

Huh...

Huh, so this is what it's like to have a blog...what do I do now?

Ah, right...go to bed and stop procrastinating! We'll see tomorrow if this thing works out any better than LiveJournal...
